Fetchmail
Recently, my ISP blocked port 25 in their routers so I can't run my own
SMTP server within punknix. It makes my punknix.com domain less usable
for mail service. I understand their intention to block port 25, as
many users (including me!!) misconfigured mail agent to a open
mail relay, a hole that enables annoymous user to send spam mails
over the net.
But I still would like to make all my mails delivered to my punknix
servers and be acessible from Mozilla mail reader using IMAP.
I recalled from
The Cathedral and the Bazaar
essay that mentions of fetchmail. Fetchmail
is a program that can download the mails from servers using different
protocol (IMAP, POP3, POP2, etc) and deliver to your local machine or
your own mail agent. So what I have done is to use my life-time mail
service from HKU (graduate.hku.hk) and configured Fetchmail to periodically
"fetch" mails from this POP3 account and deliver to my local account.
After 30 minutes of exploration and testing, I made it work!
And Debian's "apt-get" makes the way easy. Great.
