VPN with Panther Server
Few weeks ago, I had tried out Panther Server in my iBook in replace of Panther (Client) installation on the external 3.5" HD. My main intention is to experience the VPN function built into Panther Server. Hopefully, I could use it to test out if VPN could be a way to secure wireless connection instead of WEP. The installation process is the same as easy as installing Panther, though it is even occupied less disk space than Panther.
After it has installed, reboot, it comes with a login screen. As usual I login and the Desktop showed up, but now with the grey-ish wallpaper. The application resided in the Dock is quite different, all are admin-related tools. There is no iApps, of course, that's why it is smaller. I went straight with Admin Tools to configure VPN. In the first tried, the service immediately stopped after start. It was because I have no user. I created a user that identified me, and restart - and Ok. For your reference I had VPN service with PPTP and L2TP configured.
On the other side, I configured my wired PC, which is connected to my Linksys WRT54g wireless router. It also connect to the wired Panther Server. In PC, I new a VPN connection, set it connect using PPTP. Start the VPN connection, type-in the username and password. Finally, it authenicated successfully without error!! However, I find the log in Panther Server that there are some "unknown protocol" error messages. I started apache in Panther Server and use IE to see if I can connect to the server using the VPN address - it did and the sample page was shown. I was almost there.
However, the last test was failed, it cannot routed traffic to Internet. After connecting to VPN server, the PC was unable to reach the outside world, say google or yahoo. This was real shame. I tested various routing options in the VPN setting, tried the firewall and NAT settings, but still no go. I had even ask the "experts" in the Apple mailing list. But no one can anwser me thoroughly.
After few days continual tries, I stopped by. And I am now trying to install PPTP + MSCHAPv2 support in Linux. But there are lots of things to do: Patching and building kernel, installing PPTP, building new PPP with MSCHAPv2 support. I was almost there, only left with PPP right now.
